Durability Rating: ★★★★½
Overall Rating: ★★★★½

I’m a true flashlight junkie, owning several tacticals from Surefire, Inova, and Fenix. In my free time, I do some hunting, fishing and camping, and I always have a flashlight with me. I usually look for performance and reliability in my flashlights, and only buy flashlights that meet my expectations. One of my favorite flashlights is the Fenix TK40, or what is branded as the “brightest AA flashlight around”.

Personally, I don’t know the technology behind LED flashlights, but what I do know is how they perform in the field, and I like how the Fenix TK40 performs, based on these following points.

What to Look for When Buying a LED Flashlight

After being a flashlight junkie for over 8 years, and having 14 different flashlights, I can safely say that I can provide pretty accurate advice on what to look out for when buying a LED flashlight.

Use of AA Batteries

I can’t count the number of times when I’m in the middle of nowhere, and run out of batteries for my flashlight. The great thing about the Fenix TK40 is that it actually uses AA batteries, which has to be the most common form of batteries around.

4 Different Settings

Normally, I just need some illumination, but there are other times when I need to really see the area in front of me, and that’s where the TK40 shines (pun intended!). The TK40 comes with 4 different settings: low mode of 13 lumens (130 hours), medium mode of 93 lumens (20 hours), high mode of 277 lumens (6.8 hours), and turbo mode of 630 lumens (2 hours).

How Much Should You Expect to Pay?

The Fenix TK40 flashlight is available on many websites for slightly under $200, but you really shouldn’t be paying any more than $150 for this camera. The cheapest we have seen it is on Amazon, who consistently sell this digital camera for under $140.

What Current Owners Are Saying About This Tactical LED Flashlight

This LED flashlight has received rave reviews from most consumers on the net with an average of 4.75 out of 5 stars, making it one of the top tactical flashlight around.

This is the brightest flashlight around (and a very fun toy). I got this flashlight after doing extensive research, and with a lumen rating of 630, there is nothing that beats this. So I bought it and I’ve never regretted it. The flashlight has 4 settings, and the lowest setting is about equivalent to my 4D Maglight, and the 2nd setting outshines my 120 lumen Dorcy! The amazing thing about the stream on the highest setting is that the light doesn’t dissipate with distance, as most other lights do. For example, I pointed it at a stop sign about 800 feet away, and the light lit it up like a christmas tree. I don’t know any other flashlight that will do that. We took it camping recently and put it up against my 1M candlelight spotlight, and my suburban’s high beams, and the Fenix TK40 out-shown both. Amazing!

Other notables, it runs off 8 AA batteries, but will operate off 4 AA batteries too. It has 4 settings, with 4 corresponding strobe functions. The batteries will die on you after about 2 hours constantly on high, but they’ll last for weeks with normal use on the 1st, 2nd, and maybe even the 3rd light setting. It is bigger and heavier than the other tacticals, but I absolutely don’t mind because it feels solid and unbreakable, and I like that.

Any complaints?

I found very few complaints for this flashlight on consumer sites around the Internet. One consumer did express concern that 8 AA batteries was a bit too much, but it was fine because AA’s were common, and it was easy to buy a good AA charger and a set of rechargeable batteries.
