  1. This light is considered one of the best budget lights by flashlight enthusiasts. Make sure you get the upgrade version which has 3 modes, a low 1.5 lumen, a medium 40 lumen, and the high 80 lumen.

For comparison, a 3xAAA light with 9 normal 5mm LEDs (standard 5 dollar light) probably puts out 10-20 lumens or so, with a very diffused beam with no real hotspot.

This light has a very smooth beam. With a normal cheapo light if you shine it at a wall, you will see lots of rings and artifacts due to the plastic reflector.

The A3 does not have this effect at all. Holding it about a foot away from a wall, you will see that it has a hotspot of around 1 inch diameter. Then it has a corona which is about 1 foot in diameter which is called the spill.

The spill is what allows you to easily see your surroundings late at night. If you are walking, a super bright area of 1 foot across doesn’t do much for you… its the corona that lights up the entire area so you can see what you are doing. I’d say about half the power of the light goes into the corona. A focused maglight for example has almost all its power in its focused hotspot by way of comparison.

The hotspot gives the light its ‘throw’. This means that you can shine the light at something 50 feet away and still see it. The spill beam is effectively gone at that range, but your tight hotspot has expanded into a nice spotlight effect.

The light itself is a neutral white color. Against a white wall, it will appear perfectly white.. around 5000K if this helps. This is unlike an incandescent which is around 3000k and has a yellowish or ‘warm’ feel to it, and a 6500k flourescent which has a ‘cold, clinical’ feel to it.

The A3 is very tiny and can easily fit on a keychain.

Final advice: Go buy a pack of Energizer Ultimate Lithium (L92) batteries for it. This will increase its brightness a little bit (vs a rechargable or alkaline), and increase the battery life a LOT! This is well worth the 2 dollars each per battery retail, and also makes the light usable in very low temperatures (where other batteries poop out).

  2. I have always carried a small light on my key ring. They have been very useful in the past. This little ITP light (80 Lumen)is by far the best I have ever had.

It has the power of a full size flash light, yet is very small in size. I also like the screw in switch, which prevents inadvertently turning on and draining battery.

This light is well worth the money, and I would highly recommend it to everyone.

  3. I purchased this for my keychain. It turned out to be brighter than my regular full size flashlights. At 80 lumens, it is the brightest 1XAAA flashlight I have seen so far. Much brighter than any streamlight pen lights and minilights. Compare for yourself. Super small and tough. I highly recommend it.
